Newsletter #15
How tardy am I? It is Tuesday and my newsletter was scheduled to go out on Friday. I have been really busy as you can imagine, BUT it is all good busy and I know than many of you will reaps the rewards of my activities over the weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday I attended a workshop with the very talented Herman Peckel at the Bribie Island Arts Centre. Herman is probably best know for his watercolours, however I attended his acrylic / oil workshop. It was great fun and Herman has a very different approach to his acrylic and oils. He shared so much unique and interesting information which I have taken away and stored for future projects and workshops. Above are the three completed paintings I did. Two are oils and one is acrylic. Can you tell which is which? Stay tuned!
Last Tuesday I was invited to do a demonstration to the Pastel Association Sunshine Coast group. I was asked to show them my Spider webbing background. I chose one of my victims (err audience) to perform the tasks. Donned in gloves and apron Colleen proceeded to follow my directions and under my tutelage produced the above background ready for me to explore a painting to go on it. I am thinking along the lines of an outback scene, hence the reds, yellows, oranges and believe it or not magenta.
This week is the last week for the July BLOCK and the subject matter for August is TONE. "Without TONE there is no form".
Don't forget to drop into the Redcliffe Old Fire Station Gallery to see my and Tricia Taylors exhibition. While in that direction I also have a piece in the Redcliffe Gallery next to the Council Chambers in Irene Street. If you thought that was enough I also have two painting in the Matthew Flinders Gallery on Bribie Island. There is a great café there so have a cuppa and or lunch and enjoy the show. There are some fabulous pieces on display .,
Colour Schemes projects will be wrapped up this week so if you have any questions or would like to know more please let me know. Last Thursday I did two paintings using pastel with a time limit of 15 minutes to show how to paint a quick colour study / largish thumbnail before committing to your main project. The tree scene was painted using an Analogous Colour Scheme using just yellow, yellow orange and yellow green, black and white, while the mountains were painting using a Monochromatic Colour Scheme ..1 blue pastel, 1 white and 1 Black. What do you think?
We are getting to our last calls for Tasmania so if you have been thinking about joining us in Tasmania but have not already booked your position now is the time to send in your deposit. We have just booked our flights but we can accommodate additional attendee right up to 1 month before we leave. It is going to be a fabulous painting holiday with 9 so far.
If you are unsure because you are a beginner....wait no more as I specialize in beginners so you will be in great hands. Call me 0408414613 or email me [email protected] for more information or if you have any questions..
TIP:
A favourite colour combination is Viridian Green and Magenta...makes the most amazing Violet. Alternatively you can use Pthalo Green if you don't have Viridian
Some of the workshop suggestions have been:

Saturday afternoon Tricia Taylor and myself opened our joint Exhibition "Journey". We were very excited about having our friends and guests celebrate with us this momentous occasion. Thank you to everyone who joined us and thank you to all of you who will be attending in the next 3 weeks.
I had my painting Morning Renewal accepted into the Redcliffe Awards of Excellence Exhibition which is being delivered on Tuesday morning to the Redcliffe Art Gallery next to the Council Chambers in Redcliffe. Also don't forget I have paintings in the Matthew Flinders Gallery. Tricia won the "Matty Award" so a big congrats goes to her.
Colour Schemes has commenced and although there were a lot of bewildered faces I am sure the students learned a lot. The learning curve is a big one but very enjoyable and everyone is enthused to be part of it.
Tuesday night I will be demonstrating my Spider Webbing backgrounds for pastels at the Pastel Association monthly meeting. Come along. Members and Non-Members are always welcome. Contact me for more information if you would like to come along. Non-members pay only $10 while members $

ALL ABOUT INK
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INKS AND THEIR ATTRIBUTES
Ink is a gel, sol, or solution that contains at least one colorant, such as a dye or pigment, and is used to color a surface to produce an image, text, or design. Ink is used for drawing or writing with a pen, brush, reed pen, or quill. Thicker inks, in paste form, are used extensively in letterpress and lithographic printing.
Many ancient cultures around the world have independently discovered and formulated inks due to the need to write and draw. The recipes and techniques for the production of ink are derived from archaeological analyses or from written texts itself. The earliest inks from all civilizations are believed to have been made with lampblack, a kind of soot, easily collected as a by-product of fire.
Ink can be a complex medium, composed of solvents, pigments, dyes, resins, lubricants, solubilizers, surfactants, particulate matter, fluorescents, and other materials. The components of inks serve many purposes; the ink's carrier, colorants, and other additives affect the flow and thickness of the ink and its dry appearance.
Pigmented Ink
Pigmented inks actually have fine powder (pigment) in them to give them colour that are suspended in the liquid. Pigmented inks are better in some ways, worse in others pigmented inks are more resistant to UV (lightfast), very archival, are better for really ink resistant paper, and for watercolour/art. Pigmented Ink is not as absorbent as non-pigmented in k and sits more on the surface, it dry's quicker and is more water resistant than non-pigmented ink.
Non-Pigmented Ink
The dye-based inks are made from water soluble dyes, originated either from plant extracts, or for the most important part, from the synthetic chemistry. They offer more saturated and vivid printed colours, as they have a low diffusion factor. Non-pigmented inks are mostly non-archival. This ink is preferable for those using pens as there is less likelihood of the pen clogging with the pigment.
Calligraphy Ink is shellac based and if left in the pens can dry and totally destroy the pen. These traditional shellac ground pigment inks are unparalleled in richness and unique style. Due to the shellac base, these inks dry with a rich sheen and are not recommended for excess dilution with water or use in airbrushes. For best results, use a nib pen and brush, fingers or sponges to manipulate the ink.
Alcohol Inks
Alcohol inks are vibrant, fast-drying inks that can be used to make stunning paintings on a variety of non-porous surfaces. These concentrated inks are alcohol-based and waterproof. They're semi-transparent which means they can be layered and combined together to create gorgeous effects. It’s a fluid medium that can be used in many different ways. To put it briefly, you use drops of alcohol ink, isopropyl alcohol, and an air source to move the inks around a nonporous surface (like Yupo paper). The alcohol evaporates and so the inks dry very rapidly. This lets you get unique effects that aren't possible with other mediums.
Acrylic Inks
Acrylic Ink makes brilliant streams and pools of colour. Use it for ink marbling, splatter painting, in a pen for illustration and calligraphy, to stain, paint on glass (with Glass Medium), for glazing effects and washing over Masking Fluid. The options are endless.
Acrylic Ink is extremely fluid paint. It is pigment based, lightfast, and permanent once dry (it cannot be reactivated like Alcohol Ink). Acrylic Ink is just another name for Pigmented Ink.
Embossing Ink
Embossing Ink is a unique type of Ink that makes the effect possible - it's essentially a glue in an ink pad form, meant to use with stamps. Stamping with a special embossing ink will hold your embossing powder in the location you want it. First, you need to stamp your image using embossing ink. Then, sprinkle embossing powder all over it. To melt the powder, apply heat to the stamped image (with a heat tool or a heat gun). The ink and powder combination will result in a shiny texture and a gorgeous 3D effect.
Dye Inks
Since the beginning of inkjet printers, dye-based inks have been around. Using a dye dissolved in water, along with various optical compounds, dye-based inks create a bright and vibrant colour on the page. They also result in sharper text fonts too. However, due to the thinner and less durable nature of dye-based inks, they will fade rather quickly when exposed to too much sunlight. There is also that issue of smudging as the water-based components take longer to dry on the paper.
While this may rule dye-based inks out for those who want quick and quality prints, dye-based inks have improved significantly over the years and are catching up fast to their counterpart in pigment-based ink. Manufacturers such as HP & Epson are even using both pigment and dye-based inks together to formulate the ultimate combination of both durability and colour.
Printers Ink
Printing ink is made from a combination of different elements. This generally includes dispersants that help with the ink’s flow, resins for binding, pigment for colour, humectants for ink longevity, defoamer for foam control, chelating agents, drying agents, and a varnish base. Printer ink may also include pH modifiers, wetting agents, bacteriostats, and biocides. The products that are in printer ink will change depending upon a number of factors, including who manufactures the ink. Primarily used in your photocopier.
Block Printing Ink
Block printing ink is a special type of ink used for block printing, a creative technique where a design is carved into a block, typically made of wood or linoleum. These inks come in two main varieties: water-based and oil-based, each with unique characteristics to consider.
Water-Based Inks: These inks are quicker drying yet offer a long open time.
e (see below) and offer a lovely translucency with subtle gradations of tone. They are easy to clean up with just soap and water, making them user-friendly.
Oil-Based Inks: Oil-based inks, on the other hand, provide an extended open working time, allowing you to take your time during the printing process. They are known for their rich and vibrant colours, offering excellent coverage. However, some oil-based inks may require special solvents for cleanup.
When choosing block printing ink, consider the type of block you're using (whether it's linoleum or wood) and the surface you intend to print on, be it paper, fabric, or another material.
Air Brush Ink
Airbrush painting allows you to create the illusion of shadows, transparency and subtle shading effects that are not easily replicated with traditional brushes or palette knives. Air Brush Inks are simply Acrylic Inks.
Watercolour Ink
Watercolour inks are a fun and exciting medium and can be combined with great success with other media, especially watercolours.
They’re generally much brighter than watercolours, and you can use them with your watercolours to brighten up areas in your paintings. In fact, because of their brightness, watercolour inks are often used by graphic designers and illustrators for work that’s going to be photographed.
Keep in mind, however, that watercolour inks don’t blend like watercolours, and they are almost impossible to lift. They behave much like ink on an ink blotter, and once they are on your paper, that’s it! Be sure to practice using the inks on scrap paper before you drop them into a painting.
Years ago, watercolour inks weren’t lightfast and would eventually fade. Today, many inks are permanent. Be sure to check labels to make sure you choose an ink that will stay put.

- Softer, subtler and more vivid colours.
- Typically cheaper to produce and purchase.
- Easier to store and manage, as this ink does not require constant circulation to prevent settling.

Newsletter #9
Hello my Painting Friends to the Number 9 newsletter From Behind the Easel.
Welcome to our new ladies Zell and Anne-Marie who have joined our Thursday morning class. This is their first art class and both Zell and Anne-Marie did great paintings in their journals. I am also looking forward to having Michelle join us on Wednesday mornings this coming week.
The June block of classes has started with a bang and everyone seemed to love the idea of playing with their new journals. The class experimented with pens, watercolour, graphite and pencils. What a hoot!
Tips for Journaling.
1. There are NO rules
2. You can be messy
3. You can start ANYWHERE in your Journal
4. You DO NOT have to fill your journal
5. Work in ANY medium
6. Draw in pen not pencil to be looser
7. Journal is just for YOU
8. Time yourself to be loose
9. It is affordable
10. You will learn HEAPS from journaling
11. It is meditative
Next month we will be studying Colour Schemes and we have a number of new ladies starting who will be joining us in July.
This month is very busy for me. Saturday I am doing a workshop for the Pastel Association on the Gold Coast and of course the Charcoal workshop in the studio is on Sunday.
It is exhibition season so I have entered painting in the Ekka, Redcliffe Awards of Distinction, Pastel Association Annual Awards and the Matthew Flinders Exhibition as well as my exhibition in July with Tricia Taylor at the Old Fire Station Redcliffe which you are all invited to (see the attached flyer).
JULY's BLOCK will be Colour Schemes and has already begun to fill so if this interests you please be quick as spots are filling fast. We will always have a little show and tell so to speak at the end of each class, time permitting.
Currently I am revamping my website to a more sleeker version, as I do this myself it is not a quick process as I am no technical guru, as you saw last week when I forgot the SD card in the camera. DERRR!
You can now book and pay for your block of classes via the website as I now have a SHOP page. on the website. Payments can be made securely through SQUARE or the option to pay cash still exists.
Stop by and have a look https://www.landsboroughartstudio.com.au/shop.html#/
I am also currently researching how to take videos of classes and workshops which can be downloaded from my website. Stan very kindly gave me a video camera in the COVID LOCKDOWN which I need to learn how to use correctly along with all the technical business behind the scenes. I will not be replacing my one on one tuition rather this is to enhance what I already offer.
The posting of students finalized paintings on my Facebook Page Landsborough Art Studio has already begun sop and have a look and please comment on them and let them know how well they are doing. Encouragement goes a long way in our artistic journey..

I am so pleased to be able to report to you that my eye surgery has been a success and I no longer need glasses. I still have a little way to go with the healing process as the last surgery was only 3 days ago but looking good so far. Thank you for all the well wishes and concern for my operations, your kind thoughts were much appreciated.
JUST A REMINDER: June's Block of classes will be due for payment no later than the 2nd of June.
The upcoming changes to the class structure will commence on Monday 3rd June, June's Block will be Journaling - Line and Wash VERY EXCITING.
JULY's BLOCK will be Colour Schemes and has already begun to fill so if this interests you please be quick as spots are filling fast. It was suggested to me that we have a short discussion at the end of each class on what each student has done that day, any issues they encountered, what they learned and more, so commencing Monday the last 15 minutes of c lass we will do a round robin to discussed what everyone has been doing. A little show and tell so to speak.
I am looking forward to playing with watercolour, pastel, pencils, graphite, inks and crayons on our journals. We will be using the journals throughout the year to practice and record what you have learned. July will be Colour Schemes, August is all about tone, September we will cover Colour Temperature, October is exciting with Dramatic Skies and lastly November we loosen up with Contemporary Impressionism. Sounds like a plan.....
The posting of students finalized paintings on my Facebook Page Landsborough Art Studio has already begun. The fact that I took photos the other day with no SD Card in the camera is another issue. I will be asking those students if I can have another go at recording their wonderful art. Sorry guys.
This tradition is now being reinstated (hopefully with no more technical issues). Please like and follow my page to ensure you get to see all the fabulous work everyone does in my classes and workshops.

Welcome Painting Friends, to the Number 7 newsletter From Behind the Easel.
This month has been a bit disjointed for me. Eye surgery has meant that the check-up has pushed the start time of Wednesday's class out to 9.30 am and I appreciate my students understanding of the disruption to their class at this time. The second surgery is this coming Tuesday and hopefully, by then I will be glasses FREE.

Last week I ordered 2 Journals of watercolour paper by Boahong. 16cm x 24cm landscape, 300gsm , 100% Cotton. It is their Academy (student) grade watercolour sketchbook. I did a small trial in it yesterday and as a sketchbook/journal, it stood up very well. The cost was $34.70 with FREE delivery from Temu. It came with a dark green leather look cover and considering the price I was quite pleased with the quality and will no doubt be ordering more.
I will be demonstrating my Spider Webbing Background at the Pastel Association Meeting on Saturday June 8th at Mudgeeraba at the Old Post Office 57 Railway Street Mudgeeraba at 2.30 to 4.30. All welcome. PSA Members $5.00 and Non-Members $10.00. If you are down that way why not join us?
In the past, I have posted completed paintings of my students' work on my Facebook page Landsborough Art Studio to showcase what great work they have been doing. It is very educational and rewarding. Contact me if you would like more information or wish to join us.
Don't forget the Annual Exhibition and Awards for the Pastel Association are being held from 19th June to 23rd June at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Auditorium. Please consider coming along or entering your work. https://pastelsocietyofaustralia.com.au/annual-exhibition/

Newsletter #3
Welcome Painting Friends, to the THIRD newsletter from Behind the Easel.
This is probably the most significant newsletter I will be sending you this year as today, I want to share with you some significant changes to how our CLASSES are handled.
I have decided trial a move to a more structured learning environment establishing a user-friendly, value-for-money experience where students will learn new techniques or technical information through a more structured class and then have the ability to apply what they have learned to their own artwork.
Commencing Monday 3rd JUNE, classes will be divided into 4 week blocks.
Each block will be "themed" and a lesson on that "theme" will be given in week 1 of each block. Themes may consist of colour exercises, perspective, drawing, sketching techniques, how to frame your artwork, and photographing your artwork and all things art related for example. Students will then have 3 weeks to apply and use what they have learned on their own individual paintings using their preferred medium with my assistance along the way.
Payment for each month's block of 4 weeks is to be made at the start of each block and can be made either as a Direct Deposit, Cash or by Card. The only exception is July which has 5 weeks in the block.
Missed classes can be made up on ANY CLASS day within that month's block. Classes not used within the block will be forfeited.
These changes have not been made lightly and I understand you will have questions so please do not hesitate to ask them.
I will always endeavor to offer a value-for-money experience and I am always open to suggestions from my valued students.
It is with great regret that I have cancelled the excursion to the Margaret Olley Gallery on the 10th of May. The lack of numbers against costs made it prohibitive to continue. It would have been an excellent day, however, I do plan to revisit it in the second half of this year.
Cheers Karen

Newsletter #2
Welcome Painting Friends, to the second newsletter from Behind the Easel. My first week back after a short break in New Zealand has been busy for me updating my website, painting for my upcoming exhibition "Journeys" and preparing newsletters etc. The unsurpassed beauty of New Zealand is still ever present in my thoughts as I slowly edge back into the daily routines of the studio. The rain looks like it may be back soon so there grows the weeds again giving me an excuse to stay indoors and paint…yeah!
Next Thursday is Anzac Day and out of respect for our Armed Forces there will be no classes on Thursday 25th April. Lest we forget. For those who generally attend Thursday's classes, you are most welcome to join into either Monday or Wednesday's classes.
My workshop “Colour The Fundamentals has some spots still available so if you want to attend please let me know ASAP. This two-day workshop will teach you how to use tone and value, how to use a colour wheel to make your paintings harmonize, colour relationships, how colours interact with each other, colour temperature, saturation, colour mixing, using colour and temperature in perspective, tonal mapping, creating vibrant artwork by selecting good colour choices, the colours and temperatures of light and shadows, reflected highlights and much more.
It doesn't matter what medium you use just bring what you prefer to work in.

On my easel is my next painting in readiness for “Journey” an exhibition with Tricia Taylor and myself at the Old Fire Station Redcliffe 8th July to 4th August. A collection of paintings from journeys around the world from Iceland in the North to New Zealand in the South and many countries in between. Mark these dates in your calendar so you don’t miss out.
This week's painting is from New Zealand. I have chosen Blue Haze Colourfix paper in a full sheet size and after sketching I have applied a loose wash of watercolour as an underpainting. I love the effect it gives me, especially on the water as reflections.
Don’t forget we have a bus trip to Murwillumbah on the 10th of May to the Margaret Olley Galley. I hope to make a booking for a guided tour of the Gallery on the day. The cost is $75.00 for the bus and needs to be paid by 30th April. There will be pick-up points along the way with a “Potty Stop” and Coffee at or near Yatalla.

Newsletter #1
Welcome Painting Friends,
This is my first Newsletter "From Behind The Easel" which I will be posting each Friday it will be filled with Tips and Techniques along with informative news, upcoming workshops, events classes and much more.
I have just returned from painting in New Zealand where I traveled through the South Island painting in all weather and conditions. The trip has renewed my creative juices and I have come away with fresh ideas and painting references. Traveling and painting with other like-minded artists and teachers, sharing experiences and bouncing ideas off one another cannot be underestimated.
Eight days of painting outside in all weather en plein air is a truely priceless experience. Leaving hubby Stan to hold down the fort and look after our two fur babies.
My 2-day workshop "Colour The Fundamentals" is being held on Saturday and Sunday the 27th and 28th of April. I still have a couple of spots left so if you would like to come along let me know. It is just $200.00 for the two days. Excellent value. This two-day workshop will teach students how to use tone and value, how to use a colour wheel, colour relationships, how colours interact with each other, colour temperature, saturation, colour mixing, using colour and temperature in perspective, tonal mapping, creating vibrant artwork by selecting good colour choices, the colours and temperatures of light and shadows, reflected highlights and much more.
It doesn't matter what medium you work with I will cover them all.
