Karen King Teaching Artist I have been teaching painting and drawing since 1990 and just love the creativity and relaxation it brings me. I have exhibited in many art exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane and I am an active member of the Pastel Association of Australia, Kenilworth Arts Council, Bribie Island Community Arts Group, Redcliffe Art Society, Collaboration of Maleny Artists, Beachmere Art Society, Hinterland Artists as well as the Maleny Arts and crafts Fine Art Group. An award winning artist with more than 20 years painting experience teaching on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, overseas and surrounding rural districts. A published artist who had co-authored an art book as well has having several of my paintings and editorials published by internationally distributed art magazines. I was a Senior Support Teacher with Chroma Australia and ran their Teacher Support Program for many years and managed the program and member teachers. Working closely with Jim Cobb, owner and chemist of Chroma Artist Paints testing and sampling new paints and mediums. Sadly Jim passed away in February 2024 and will be greatly missed, I now co-ordinate the Sunshine Coast arm of the Australian Pastel Association (PSA) and was part of the management committee for PSA 2022 Pastel EXPO. Coming from a commercial teaching environment in my early working career has given me many of my teaching skills allowing me the ability to teach people of varying painting levels even those who have absolutely no previous painting experience. Teaching and painting are my passion and my philosophy is that you do not need to be “gifted” or have a “natural ability” to create beautiful art. Painting and drawing are teachable art forms and I can teach you how to achieve your goals at a pace, which best suits you and your ability. Painting is a passion and no matter if you want to paint or draw for pleasure or professionally you will need some help along the way to get there and I am here to assist you in your painting journey. If it is oils, acrylics, watercolour or pastels we use them all. Teaching and working in all styles and mediums and experimenting with new ideas and products is certainly challenging but produces a creative and productive environment and opens up new horizons.
